Pebbledash Painting in Nottingham

Robin Decorators paint pebbledash across Nottingham. The rough pebble-faced exterior finish is found on thousands of interwar and postwar semis throughout the city’s suburbs.
Nottingham has an enormous stock of pebbledashed semis. West Bridgford, Arnold, Carlton, and Mapperley all have streets of 1930s to 1950s semis where pebbledash covers the upper half or the whole property.

How Pebbledash Is Painted
Pebbledash is a different job from smooth render. The stones create a large total surface area. Standard rollers cannot reach into the crevices between pebbles.
We use long-pile masonry rollers supplemented with brush application. For larger elevations, professional airless spray equipment achieves consistent coverage.
Washing and Treating the Surface
Pebbledash traps organic matter in the gaps between stones. North and east-facing walls develop heavy algae and moss.
We pressure wash the entire surface to remove biological growth and surface dirt. Paint applied over biological growth fails quickly. The preparation stage is what gives the finished coat its lifespan.
Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting
On older properties, individual pebbles detach over time and leave bare patches. These need filling and re-embedding before any paint goes on.
We inspect the surface during the assessment and include minor repairs in the scope. More extensive repairs are quoted separately.
Colour Changes
Pebbledash colour changes are one of the most dramatic exterior transformations available to Nottingham homeowners. A tired grey or beige pebbledash house repainted in a rich heritage green, slate blue, or warm off-white looks completely different.
Partial Pebbledash — Upper Half Only
The most common configuration on Nottingham’s interwar housing has pebbledash on the upper storey. Painting the upper section requires working from ladders or a scaffold tower.
For full-house work, see our exterior painting page. For properties with mixed materials, see our render painting page.
Here’s How It Works
1. Surface Inspection
We assess the extent of biological growth, any detached pebbles, and the current paint condition before quoting.
2. Pressure Washing
The full surface is washed to remove moss, algae, and dirt from the stone crevices.
3. Biological Growth Treatment
Where significant growth is present, a mould treatment is applied and allowed to dry.
4. Repairs
Loose or detached pebbles are re-embedded and repaired areas are primed.
5. First Coat
Applied with a long-pile roller and brush to work the paint into the crevices.
6. Second Coat
Once fully dry, the second coat is applied for consistent colour and coverage.
